Sometimes you just know a piece is special. Just viewing this creamer and sugar, picking up and handling it, I can tell it has age and quality. This is a larger creamer and large sugar bowl in white ceramic colored with a matte cream colored glaze, and then hand painted chevron pattern with stunning gold accents. The sugar has a lid, and the lid is finished with a charming little daisy shaped handle.
I only say it is Art Deco style, because I don't think it IS Art Deco - I think it is much older, possibly Arts and Crafts.
The mark on the underside is very attractive and very legible and in English. It reads: "Hand Painted, Kobe Ware, Made by R. Kohara Co." and it does not include the country of origin but Kobe is a city in Japan, and Kohara is a Japanese name, so this set was made in Japan for the English speaking market, either the US or England. However it DOES not say 'Japan' on it, or 'Nippon', which means it probably predates the law requiring the country of origin to be marked clearly. This law was enacted in 1890 - unless it was made for the British market. They might not have the same law.
CONDITION: The pair is in good to excellent condition with just as small mark on the spout of the creamer. I included that in the photos.
SIZE: The creamer is about 4 1/2 inches tall and 4 inches wide including handle.
The sugar is over 5 inches tall and 6 inches wide.
