This copy of Photoplay from April 1949 has a green cover with Betty Grable, famous for her legs, on the cover in a green sweater and lovely smile. On the cover we are also promised Montgomery Clift's life story, as well as color portrait. Definitely a great piece on Clift. We also get to hear from notorious gossip columnist Louella Parsons on Judy Garland and her little daughter Liza (Minnelli), and there is a charming photo of mother and daughter to go with it.
Photoplay was one of the earliest movie magazines, founded the same year as Motion Picture Magazine, and was in print from 1911 to 1980, and was once very influential, even creating awards that were to model the Academy Awards! It soon edged out Motion Picture for the biggest market share with its particular melding of 'light' gossip, photos, stills, the lives of the stars, and beauty and fashion tips. Back in the early days articles about the stars tended to be positive. Unlike today people wanted their movie stars to be virtuous, and were horrified by scandal, often voting with their feet, and a star could be ruined by bad behavior.
CONDITION: Very good to excellent with some light wear on the spine, and a tiny bit of discoloration on one side of the cover.
SIZE: It is a 8.5 inch by 11 inch format
