A footed open sugar and creamer in Fostoria Baroque with a charming silver overlay of wild roses. This is a very elegant pattern with a an ornate fleur de lis motif on four sides that has been beautiful accented by the silver pattern. Silver overlay was popular as a way to create a truly special and refined service, with the opulence of silver and the crystal lightness of glass.
The line was made between 1937 and 1958 during the same period as depression glass. The difference between elegance glass patterns is quality and craftsmanship. This glassware would have been much more expensive at the time it was made. Much of the work was hand done, and the glass is better quality with less mold lines, and less flaws.
From wiki: Silver overlay is an electroplated coating of silver on a non-conductive surface such as porcelain or glass. Most techniques used to create silver overlay involve the use of special flux which contains silver and turpentine oil. This is then painted on the glass ornament as a design. After the painting is complete, the entire ornament is fired under relatively low heat, it is then cleaned after being quenched and cooled, then it is placed in a solution of silver. A low voltage current is run through the solution and the silver binds in the design, creating a permanent fusion of the silver with the glass.
CONDITION: Excellent with no chips, cracks or nicks - there is some scuff marks from use, as is typical of glass of this age, however over all I have rarely seen better condition in such plates.
SIZE: The luncheon plates measure 8 1/2 inches across.
