This pair of Kilburn and Davis stereo cards humorous or sentimental scenes so popular with the late Victorians. One of the two stereoviews in this listing is of a humble marriage titled "Until death do you part" and numbered 7389 copyright 1892, and the other is a scene later in a marriage where a husband is complaining to his wife because he can't find a towel to dry his hands: "Where in thunder is the towel?" The lady seems a little fashionably dressed for the humble setting of this scene! The card is numbered 12855 and copyright 1899. This card is also credited to James Davis.
These are B. W. Kilburn stereoscopic cards from Littleton, N. H. where the business was located. Benjamin W. Kilburn, along with his brother Edward, were photographers and at the time one of the largest producers of important stereoviews. One of this pair also has the name of James M. Davis, a photographer and salesman on it. Davis joined the company in 1890. In 1909 the company ceased operations and the negatives were sold to the Keystone View Company.
Stereoviews were once produced in large quantities, a form of 3D entertainment and a way for people to see exotic or interesting locales far from home using a stereoscopic viewer - like the stereoscope. They are two nearly identical views photographed from a single stereoscope camera with two lens.
CONDITION: Good with the usual bumping, etc. The wedding scene is quite faded, and the later card is quite soiled, though the photo is crisp and clear.
SIZE: 7 inches x 3 1/2 inches.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the fragility of these cards, and their curvature, they must be shipped in boxes - shipping prices reflect that. Any shipping costs in excess with multiple card orders will be refunded.
