Intriguing mid century African art anthropomorphic ladle or spoon. This carved lightweight folk art piece was brought back from Africa in the sixties by a woman that worked in diplomacy. The wood seems to have been stained with a red and dark brown stain, but also very lightweight. While it is a spoon I believe it was meant to be ritualistic or simply ornamental. Very unusual and distinctive.
The bowl is a carved human face, and the handle is the body with hand crossed in front. It is a female figure.
CONDITION: Very good, just standard wear for an object of this age.
SIZE: 9 inches long and 4 1/2 inches wide at the head.
