A tiny edition of "The Sorrows of Young Werther", the melodramatic and romantic novel that made its author Johann Wolfgang Van Goethe an overnight sensation when it was first published. This little pocket sized version, leather bound with a gorgeous marbled cover, and marbled endpapers, was published in Paris by Charpentier in 1884. It has an engraved frontiss.
Werther inspired a whole genre of writing, and was also the first recorded novel to inspire copycat behavior by its fans.
This a beautiful object - it would look good as part of any antique and antiquarian book collection, and would make a wonderful gift to a book lover. The marbling is particularly gorgeous.
CONDITION: Good to very good with a nice solid cover with good color and only light to moderate bumping on the edges. The leather has experienced wear in the last 134 years, particularly scuffing, but is still tight, and not crumbling. There is gold on the top edge of the pages, and it still retains its original silk bookmark ribbon.
SIZE: 4 1/2 inches by 3 1/4 inches.
